numerous adverse health and social outcomes, including alcohol
poisoning, hypertension, acute myocardial infarction, sexually
transmitted infections, unintended pregnancy, fetal alcohol syndrome,
sudden infant death syndrome, suicide, interpersonal violence, and motor
vehicle crashes .This report indicates that binge drinking is common
among U.S. adults, especially among whites, males, persons aged 18--34
years, and those with household incomes >$50,000. These sociodemographic
characteristics stand in contrast to characteristics for many other
health risk factors (e.g., smoking and obesity), where prevalence tends
to be higher among minorities and persons with lower education and
income”

Wilson HW and Widom CS. Sexually Transmitted Diseases Among Adults Who
Had Been Abused and Neglected as Children: A 30-Year Prospective
StudyApril 2009, Vol 99, No. S1 | American Journal of Public Health
S197-S203
The authors set out to examine associations between childhood abuseand
neglect and the risk in adulthood for sexually transmitteddiseases. In a
prospective cohort design, they matched childrenaged 0 to 11 years with
documented cases of abuse or neglectduring 1967 to 1971 with a control
group of children who hadnot been maltreated (754 participants in all)
and followed theminto adulthood. Information about lifetime history of
sexuallytransmitted diseases was collected as part of a medical
statusexamination when participants were approximately 41 years old.
The authors found that
· Childhood sexual abuse increased risk for any
sexuallytransmitted disease and more than 1 type ofsexually transmitted
disease
· Physical abuse increased risk for more than 1 typeof sexually
transmitted disease
The authors conclude that their results provided the first prospective
evidencethat child physical and sexual abuse increases risk for
sexuallytransmitted diseases. They suggest that early screening and
interventions areneeded to identify and prevent sexually transmitted
diseasesamong child abuse victims.
Vennemann MM et al. Sleep Environment Risk Factors for Sudden Infant
Death Syndrome: The German Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Study PEDIATRICS
Vol. 123 No. 4 April 2009, pp. 1162-1170
These German authors set out to investigate the risk factors forsudden
infant death syndrome in the infants' sleep environmentfor a population
in which few infants sleep prone as a resultof education campaigns. They
conducted a population-based sudden infant death syndromecase-control
study over 3 years (1998–2001) in Germany.
The authors found that there were 333 sudden infant death syndrome
cases and998 matched controls. Although only 4.1% of the infants
wereplaced prone to sleep, those infants were at a high risk ofsudden
infant death syndrome. Those who were unaccustomed tosleeping prone were
at very high risk, as were those who turnedto prone. Bed sharing
(especially for infants younger than 13weeks); duvets; sleeping prone on
a sheepskin; sleeping in thehouse of a friend or a relative (compared
with sleeping in theparental home); and sleeping in the living room
(compared withsleeping in the parental bedroom) increased the risk for
suddeninfant death syndrome; pacifier use during the last sleep
wasassociated with a significantly reduced risk of sudden infantdeath
syndrome.
The authors conclude that this study has clarified the risk factors for
suddeninfant death syndrome in a population where few infants
sleepprone. This study supports the current recommendations of
theAmerican Academy of Pediatrics. This study has identified
severalnovel risk factors for sudden infant death syndrome: an
increasedrisk if the infants sleeps outside the parental home, deathin
the living room, and the high risk when sleeping prone ona sheepskin;
however, because the numbers of cases in thesegroups are small,
additional studies are needed to confirm thesefindings.
NB: Note that we have seen SIDS deaths in cases where the mother was
suddenly homeless and had to sleep on a cot or sofa bed in a friends or
relatives home – another terrible risk for childbearing families who are
foreclosed.

Mosavel M. The Feasibility of Mothers Accepting Health Advice from
their Adolescent Daughters. Journal of Health Care for the Poor and
Underserved. Volume 20, Number 1, February 2009 pp. 42-49
The influence of mothers on the health behaviors of their adolescent
daughters has been well established; however, little work has focused on
the potential of daughters to influence the health behaviors of their
mothers. The author set out to assess the feasibility of mothers
accepting cancer advice from their daughters. They conducted 12 focus
groups with 75 African American and Hispanic mothers from inner-city
neighborhoods in a Midwestern city in the United States. By means of the
focus groups, researchers investigated whether mothers would allow their
adolescent daughters to give them health advice and the extent to which
cultural norms would affect if, and how, mothers listen to such advice.
This study discovered the potential of daughter-initiated health advice
and identified the cultural challenges associated with it. The author
concludes that results suggest that health promotion programs aimed at
the mother might involve adolescent daughters as influential opinion
leaders within the family.
